I have a lot of great memories driving around San Diego in my Volvo wagon in various mental states listening to Beefheart and the Magic Band's beautifully dissonant, precisely jumbled, mysteriously emotional music.

I immediately stopped working to go to Hypem and sit quietly in solemn respect while listening to his music but quickly found myself smiling. It's impossible not to. That's a quality I'll always consider when someone or something reminds me of Captain Beefheart. Rest in piece. Blabber and smoke.

I've been hosting my domain koexist.com with Web Hosting Buzz www.webhostingbuzz.com since the early 2000's, i think 2002. To be honest, I found them with a search engine and they didn't look all that established at the time. They certainly did not have the awesome site they have today. But they did have rock solid hosting. I was impressed that for $6/month I got all the bandwidth I needed and the power to host sites for my friends and clients along side mine. Today I still have the same account running koexist.com (there's not much there right now, I know) plus I've convinced my company to get one of their virutal hosting packages for unlimited FTP use.

To be fair, there have been some ups and downs... we are talking about computers here, after all. The good news is, the WHB guys are super fast to respond to support requests and I've never had to wait long for results.

So there it is, my recommendation if you're ever looking for inexpensive, solid hosting. For registration, I suggest checking out Netfirms. They have an easy panel to manage your domain registrations and automatic renewal that warns you well in advance before they charge you.

One of my favorite games writers, Leigh Alexander (SexyVideoGameLand, Gamasutra, Kotaku), brought up an item from the GDC 2009 Rants panel in an attempt to discuss maturity in games and game developers. Unfortunately it turned into the old "comic Vs. literature" debate when she kicked the nerd hive and the nerd bees came out to defend it!

Aside from that tangent, the piece is an interesting outlook that successfully distracted me this week.

David Jaffe had a solid response too. While I don't find it to the the definitive response that some of his followers think it is, I certainly don't disagree with his perspective.

Star Wars: The Old Republic is real, yay. Sorry, my enthusiasm has been hampered by the masses of forum trolls pummeling the SW:TOR forums. The old Star Wars MMO, Galaxies, had a notoriously bad community of forum trolls constantly bitching, whining and flaming and all that crap took its toll on the game and likely its developers along with it. So these guys are hitting the new MMO's forums hard. It seems to be getting better as I think the forum moderators went on high alert wielding their ban-hammers.

I picked up King's Bounty on Amazon and it arrived yesterday. Got home late after meeting a fellow musician from em411.com for a little electro music jam so I haven't even installed it yet. I'll dig into it tonight for sure and post about it soon. Then again,...

Two mighty forces of geekery and awesome are joining forces once again to bring me (ok, and a few million other fans) sheer joy. Its like an Oreo Blizzard with mint ice cream when the mighty storytelling game company BioWare and the gatekeepers of all that is Star Wars video gaming, Lucas Arts, join forces to create a "groundbreaking interactive product". Er, couldn't they just say game?

It's been two years since they officially announced the collaboration and we haven't heard a single detail about what it actually is. This week, game journos interweb-wide received this fancy invitation in the mail:

The Long Lost Blog

So I resurrected this blog again with the intention of getting motivated to blog a lot then letting it dissolve once I get bored with it.

The fun thing about finding this blog again is looking back. The first thing that stood out was the title. It used to be called "Aura of Frustration". Wow, I was a tad more angsty back then. Not surprising, of course, since I was in college, had a crappy job and was continually dating really disappointing women.

Life is on the other end of the spectrum now. I graduated, got a job with OkraTron 5000, voice over company which turned into a job for GL33k game audio company. I moved in with my sweet lady and we moved together with GL33k to Austin, TX.

Now I've got the job I've always dreamed about and a good girl who's just the right amount of exciting and I live in a town that's full of bars, parties and big events and isn't shy about getting it's freak on.

I'm motivated to start this blog up again to start talking about games and game theory, linking to smart people on the web who are pushing boundaries and doing things I want to get into. The first one is Jane McGonigal. If you know her it's probably because she's recognized by smart-person entities like MIT and Harvard for having breakthrough ideas on Alternate Reality Games or ARGs. You might also know of the Halo 2 viral marketing campaign "ilovebees" which is what got me interested.

Laptop Deathmatch Halloween Party 2006

The Laptop Battle Dallas chapter, Laptop Deathmatch, holds an annual Halloween Party where we put down our gloves and put on costumes. We come dressed as whoever we mash-up or remix.

For me, it was a chance to resurrect the corpse of Kurt Cobain, now Kurt NoBrain, and have him unleash vengeance on all who marginalized him or his family as well as those who idolized him to an embarrassing degree.

I did a 12-something minute remix/demix/decomposition/destruction set of Nirvana starting with a Seattle news report that aired the eve of his death.

I hit play on the clip and fell to the edge of the stage so everyone could see the bloody spot on the back of my head as they witnessed Kurt rising from the grave. Bleach's Blew and Big Cheese started off the set spewing hate and destruction to all.

Next a clip from an interview with Cobain plays over a loop from the Unplugged version of Dumb where Cobain mentions how happy he was to have found a mate. This is where my girlfriend Cara, dressed as a damn fine Courtney Love, stumbled to the stage with a mock-drunk smugness for a big wet kiss with her long-dead corpse of a husband.

She was the crowd's darling.

After a spacey droning rendition of Dumb, psychedelic enough to piss off Nirvana's obsessive "punk" followers, Kurt summoned the 100-ton weight of the mega hit album Nevermind to finish off anyone left in the crowd.

Kurt's then delivered his parting message punctuated by two high-flying middle fingers: "I don't regret a thing!"

Kurt's final message repeated in warped echoes and distortion, fading away as he crawled back to his grave.

All that was left was the looping segment of an old Cobain interview of him saying "I was suicidal, I just didn't want to live" when Courtney gave Kurt's corpse a final farewell.

Laptop Deathmatch: May 28th 2006

First, I have to give respect to tonight's MC, the hilarious Mr. John Freeman. Joe Butcher is not an easy act to follow, but he complimented the Nerd Rape stylings of the Butcher.

Next, my hat goes off to CYGNUS for defeating us all once again. Since I didn't think to bust out the camera phone until the very end, I only have pix of Cygnus. Oh, there's also one of Cara and I posing all cheesy with him too.

Finally, I'm announcing that the Laptop Deathmatch is my favorite night of the month, every month. I always have a blast there. I'm sure I would if I wasn't participating too. As a fan of electronic music, I'm treated with a buffet of new local artists to listen to and explore. As an electronic musician of sorts, I'm treated with the knowledge of at least 100 years of collective experience.

I'm pretty sure the crowd is getting bigger at the Deathmatch each month, but this time did seem slightly more sparse. Hopefully it's only because of the holiday weekend.

I'm so bad with names. I should have been writing them down. There were some awesome "new" people tonight that I want CDs of. One guy from Austin killed with a oxy8-sized midi controller on a strap that he played keytar style. Keytar playing bitrock just fuckin owns.

I missed bexametrix and frogboy. Where were you guys?

Mwanza looked to be having a good time. I'm glad he was able to kick back and just run the board instead of having to run around like mad.

Update: That was really fun! The few people who stuck it out seemed to enjoy my collection of tracks and the little bits of backstory I gave with each one. I have a long way to go in smoothing it out, but for the first straight up concert, i think it was pretty good!

James and Paul of the Metrognome mentioned a comic book event they're putting on and the possibility of me playing music that night. Some more ambitious ideas came up, but I won't jinx them by talking about it yet.

Circle R Media and Illumitoon Party

DJ Sexy Dillionaire invited me to a private mini-deathmatch at the Circle R (radioshack) office in downtown Fort Worth on Tuesday (5/2/06). We were entertainment for a private party celebrating a new company opening up called Illumitoon.

It was nine laptop musicians competing for a $500 prize. I wasn't concerned about winning, just having fun... and that I did.

It was a bit strange overall. The party seemed well organized, but our part, the mini-deathmatch, wasn't included in all of that. It didn't matter, really, we were able to throw together a show.

Of course, the crowd at this party was totally mixed, and only a handful of the guests stuck around to experience the whole thing. Apparently the idea was that the audience would help to decide which of the battlers went on to the next round... that wasn't the best idea since they didn't really want to pick sides or even have to be involved. We singled out a really nice couple, the people behind the webcomic Welcome Consumer, to be our final judges since they seemed to be some of the only people left standing after our auditory assault.

They were kind enough to carry The Wild Bull and I to the final round. As they were deciding a winner, he and I made a deal to split the winnings regardless of the outcome. We must have seen it coming, because they decided we should split it too. So I came home with a half the winnings. And I'm totally floored because the other AMAZING people who played. They were all very gracious and we had fun chatting it up at the end of our little event.

Laptop Deathmatch Report

Last night was probably the most fun I've had playing my electronic music. The deathmatch was a success at the DoubleWide! There were 18 players! This thing gets bigger every time. Eventually there will be so many that they'll have to start turning people away.

Event organizer and all around audio handyman Mwanza AKA The Wild Bull

won after the judges declared the final round between Mwanz and the flamboyant faux-Frenchman DJ Sexcidillionaire a tie before a crowd that wanted blood.

A tie was NOT going to cut it. The crowd chanted "TO THE DEATH! TO THE DEATH!"

They also chanted "NERD RAPE! NERD RAPE! NERD RAPE!" thanks to the MC Joe Butcher opening the show with, "I've always wanted to rape a nerd."

I should mention that I made it past the first single-elimination round, so in round 2, I was one of 8 deathmatchers left. While I was waiting for my laptop to boot, Joe told a story that involved him being 8 years old and having a necrophilic fantasy involving Burt Renyolds. Needless to say, I didn't make it past the 2nd round. I blame it on the horrible physiological response that story had on all of us... me as a performer and the judges as... well judges.

I'm doing a track with Soyogen from Houston for the em411.com mixit song creation game. Everyone uploads samples, we make a track, post and review tracks, etc.

Soyo and I are sending .ALS files back and forth through gmail. Since we're using the same samples as source audio, we don't need to send big files. It's a nice way of working.

Here's my latest mix. This is after my third time of having the ALS and remixing, adding, subtracting and tweaking parts. The amount of DSP is a little much, but i having a lot of fun with it all.

I’m hoping to get a callback on a resume I submitted to a new Dallas film studio. The company sounds exactly like what I’ve been wanting to be involved with for the past few years.

Their setup looks awesome. If you click the link to their studio layout, you can see they have a dedicated Final Cut Pro room, a sound room, several large filming studios… so much going on that I’d love to be involved in.

The best part is they’re right here in town. Not L.A. or New York! I could work for them while I finish my degree. Eventually I would prove myself worthy in some part of their operation as I have in every other profession opportunity I’ve had.

They’re even on the same street as the studio my girlfriend works on! That’s a great bonus.

I sent my resume last week and sent a follow-up email this week. I hate to pester them, but I also want to prove that I’m committed to this offer and that I’m serious. I think I’ll call the number on their website and follow-up that way today.

The reason my original mod didn't work was because of an installation foo.

On the reverse side of the card there's a x-shaped plate that squishes a rubber pad into the card and pulls the heatsink down onto the GPU. The plate is curved so that it has a concave side and a convex side, and I had put the concave side toward the card.

This is wrong!

You want to put the plate on the card with the concave side facing out.The reason it's curved like this is to create additional pressure on the nuts that hold the screws from the heatsink onto the card. When I had it on backward, it wasn't creating any resistance against the nuts holding on the heatsink, so the heat transfer was weak between the GPU and the heatsink.

The instructions could be updated to make it a little more obvious which direction the plate should face. Or I could just be a little less NUBISH.

Now my card idles at 55 degrees Celsius versus 65. I haven't had a chance to play any WoW, so I'm not sure what it will look like under load, but I'm sure it'll be better than the 78-80 degrees I was seeing before.

The musicians who play at SXSW each year often stop by our little metroplex to play a gig or two before heading down to Austin. The organizers are the very cool Dallas-Fort Worth metro area art-nerds of The Metrognome Collective.

Re: keeping the 6800GS cool

I'm not having luck with this mod so far. The 6800GS is designed a little differently than the other 6800's, so I wasn't able to use the passive memory heatsink. Also, i don't think the heatsink is pulling the heat off the GPU as well as it could be. So far I'm only seeing gains of 2-3 degrees Celsius. I'm going to do a little research and see what I can do to fix it.

adcBicycle is a project I bumped into at em411. This album is one of the coolest things I've heard in a long time. Basically it sounds like happy accident after happy accident until finally an effortless-sounding cohesive album was finished.

Naturally, this probably wasn't how he created the album. I'm sure it was carefully planned and labored over, but I can't get over how naturally improvised it sounds. I've spent a lot of time playing improvised music with a lot of different people, so I'm familliar with the excitement of making something up with someone else and it sounding amazing on-the-fly. This album gives me that sensation when I hear some of the meandering electronica meshing perfectly with live instruments like drums and guitar. For you non-musicians, think of the feeling you get when you get when you're talking to someone and you both say the same thing at the same time.

For you lucky cheap-asses, the adcBicycle LP is available for free download! I bought my copy and am very proud to own it. Cool packaging too for being homemade!

Oil prices should be going up again thanks to news that Abqaiq, one of the biggest oil refineries in the land of our good friends the Saudis, had an attempted gank go down today. Luckily, the brunt of the attack was stopped by Abqaiq security, but there were some explosions. The article I read didn't specify if the attackers caused it or if it was an unrelated accident. Barrels of Oil went up $2 so far in response to this.

I hate my journalism minor right now. Feature Writing, a class that seemed to be the highlight of a journalism minor turns out to be my worst class in years. We've had to sit through three guest speakers in the last two weeks. It seems like the prof is looking for any way possible to get out of having to actually TEACH us some shit. Oh, don't get me wrong, she's full of insight when it comes to scratching down some aloof comments at the end of my 1800 word article; too bad it never translates into me actually learning how to go about my writing in a "better" way.

I've contemplated dropping this class and the whole minor more times in the past few weeks than I took shits. I hate when this happens because I'm trying SO hard to forget all of the real-life problems my family and I face everyday to be able to get this fucking degree. I put aside overwhelming hopelessness and frustration just long enough to squeeze out some articles and i get worse grades than I could had I actually squeezed out some grunt in the teacher's hand.

keeping the 6800GS cool

I recently upgraded my trusty NVIDIA Ti4400 card to the 6800GS by eVGA. Since the necessary power supply upgrade (went with Enermax again) I've enjoyed amazing graphics performance on my over 3-year-old system. My only concern is that the 6800 runs at 60C, and over 70C while running WoW.

Today I ordered the Arctic Cooling NVsilencer:

I'll let you know how it goes, but from what I've read, it should knock 10-20C off both the idle and the working temperature.
